When people think about trauma healing, their mind often immediately jumps to the recovery from the experience of horrific events or a tumultuous life history – but in reality, it is so much more than that.
I cannot even count how many times I have worked with a client who told me incredibly frightening stories from their lives, but most interestingly, they did not immediately label them as traumatic. What often happens with trauma survivors is that we normalize these experiences that were actually profoundly unsafe and life-threatening.
Starting my work in trauma healing was the beginning of a deep and profound journey for me. As I witnessed people in the hardest moments of their lives, I learned how important it is to be seen in our pain and to hold each other with softness and compassion.
“Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness.” – Peter A. Levine
Being present with what is happening in the nervous system allows us to tap into the deeper layers of trauma and how the body holds these memories long after the events have passed – this is the core of somatic trauma therapy.
The Journey of Trauma Healing
If you are here, you may already know something about trauma. Many of the adults I work with have done therapy before…
- They have read the books
- They can name their attachment style
- They can articulate their childhood dynamics with clarity and insight
And yet something in the body still feels stuck. This is often where somatic trauma therapy begins.
I created Rise Beyond Trauma Center because I believe trauma healing must move beyond insight alone. It must include the body, the nervous system, the deeper layers of meaning, and the quiet spiritual insight that often sits beneath survival.
I’ve lived firsthand through the process of trauma healing and spent many years dedicated to deepening my education on this subject so that I can better help others in recovery. I’ve witnessed the profound transformation that is possible when healing is grounded in a holistic, embodied, and deeply human approach.
Trauma Isn’t About the Past, It’s About How It Impacts Us in the Present
Trauma is often misunderstood as a single event from the past, and many survivors are shamed for not being able to just “let it go”.
But in reality, trauma is what happens inside the nervous system when an experience overwhelms our capacity to cope, and we do not have adequate support to process it. It becomes less about what happened in the past and more about what the body had to do to survive, and how this experience feels almost frozen in time within the body in the present.
For many adults with complex trauma, especially developmental trauma, common symptoms can include:
- Hypervigilance
- Emotional numbing
- Addictive behaviors
- People pleasing
- Difficulty setting boundaries
- Perfectionism
- Rumination
- Difficulty trusting others
- Fear of abandonment and simultaneous fear of closeness
A common misconception about trauma is rooted in the realization that these are not character flaws; these are intelligent survival strategies.
Holistic trauma therapy begins with honoring the wisdom of these adaptations rather than trying to eliminate them. Your system learned to protect you in the best way it knew how. Healing begins when we create enough safety for those protective strategies to soften rather than functioning out of reactivity.
This is why somatic trauma therapy is central to my work. Trauma lives in the body, and therefore healing must involve the body.

What Is Somatic Trauma Therapy
Somatic trauma therapy focuses on the connection between mind and body. Rather than working only with thoughts and narratives, we also track physical sensations, nervous system states, breath patterns, and embodied responses.
When a trigger arises, it is not only a story. It is a surge of activation in the nervous system.
- A tightening in the chest
- A clenching in the jaw
- A collapse in posture
- A subtle holding of breath
These signals tell a story that words often cannot.
In online somatic therapy sessions, we slow down and notice. We build capacity to stay present with sensation in small, manageable ways. As your nervous system expands in capacity, we then gently process memories through approaches such as Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, and Lifespan Integration, while maintaining regulation in the body. We explore parts of you that developed to protect against overwhelming pain.
Over time, the nervous system learns something new.
It learns that the present is not the past, that connection does not automatically equal danger, that rest is possible – and that it is actually, finally, safe to relax.
This is not about forcing calm. It is about cultivating resilience and flexibility within the nervous system and helping your body recognize that you are no longer living under threat.
A Holistic Approach to Trauma Recovery
At Rise Beyond Trauma Center, I practice holistic trauma therapy. This means I see you as more than a diagnosis and more than symptoms to manage.
You are a whole person with a body, a history, relationships, beliefs, longings, and a unique inner world.
Holistic trauma therapy recognizes that healing can involve multiple dimensions:
- Emotional processing
- Nervous system regulation
- Attachment repair
- Relational skill building
- Exploration of meaning and purpose
- Whole-body wellbeing
- Integration of spirituality or meaning making
Many trauma survivors struggle not only with anxiety or depression but with a deeper sense of disconnection. This disconnection can occur on multiple levels from the body, from others, from self, and from something greater. My work holds space for all of that complexity.
While the foundation of my work is grounded in EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, parts work, yoga therapy, and trauma-informed care, the spirit of my practice is relational. I believe that a safe connection is one of the most powerful healing forces available to us. Together, we create a nourishing container for healing, allowing the shadows of your true self to reveal themselves and for all the parts of you to be met with compassion, kindness, and deep insight.
Why Trauma Therapy Work Is Personal
There is a reason I chose this path of trauma healing. Like many therapists drawn to working with trauma, I have personally experienced the impact of unprocessed pain. I have seen how survival strategies that once protected us can quietly shape our relationships, identity, and self-worth.
I have also seen what becomes possible when someone feels deeply seen without being pathologized.
The most profound moment in trauma therapy is often when a client realizes that their reactions make sense, when shame begins to loosen, and when the narrative shifts from “What is wrong with me” to “Of course my system responded that way.”
I created Rise Beyond Trauma Center because I wanted to offer a space where that shift could happen regularly. A space where adults navigating complex trauma could feel both clinically supported and profoundly understood.
This work is not about fixing you; it is about helping you come home to yourself.

Online Therapy for Adults with Complex Trauma
Many of the individuals drawn to my practice are often doing well on the surface – they are working professionals, caregivers, leaders, and creatives. From the outside, they appear competent and stable.
But internally, they may carry a persistent sense of not being enough, overextend in relationships, struggle with boundaries, and feel exhausted from constantly anticipating others’ needs. Additionally, they often have strong insight and intellectual capacity (a common result of trauma and hypervigilance).
But traditional talk therapy can reinforce these cognitive loops without fully accessing the underlying nervous system patterns. In somatic trauma therapy, we gently bypass the overthinking mind and engage with the deeper layers of experience.
This embodied somatic work often creates breakthroughs where insight alone has plateaued.
What You Can Expect from This Blog
This blog will serve as an extension of the work we do at Rise Beyond Trauma Center. Here you will find education about somatic trauma therapy and holistic or alternative approaches to healing.
My intention is that even reading these articles begins to soften something inside you so that you feel less alone in your experience. Education helps us begin to recognize our patterns not as defects but as adaptations that once ensured our survival.
Are You Ready to Take the Next Step in Trauma Recovery?
If you have been functioning for years while quietly struggling, you are not broken.
If you understand your trauma intellectually but still feel emotions stuck in your nervous system, you are not failing at therapy. Your body is asking to be included.
Rise Beyond Trauma Center exists because I believe healing is possible when we honor the whole of who you are, explore with gentle curiosity, and combine clinical depth with compassion to help recognize that trauma may have shaped you, but it does not define you.
Somatic trauma therapy and holistic trauma therapy offer more than coping skills; they help you tap into the deeper level of healing to rewire your nervous system from the inside out.
You deserve more than survival.
You deserve to rise beyond trauma.
